Rooted in the Homeland by Raneem from Gaza

In this visceral and symbolic drawing, Raneem illustrates the literal and figurative connection between the Palestinian people and their soil. The center of the piece is an anatomical heart, which serves as a canvas for the Palestinian flag and the traditional patterns of the Keffiyeh.

The dark, branch-like veins stretching across the heart evoke the imagery of olive tree roots—symbols of peace and ancient belonging—grounding the heart firmly in the identity of the land. It is a haunting yet beautiful representation of a life shaped by both profound love and the harsh realities of conflict.

From the Artist:
"My heart is rooted in Palestine, in Al-Aqsa. I was born for its love. I was born wrapped in the warmth of its embrace, amid the echoes of bullets, explosions, and uprisings. When will the day come when we see its cities in peace and walk freely toward Al-Aqsa? I am a Palestinian from Gaza—carrying a homeland in my heart and hope in my soul."

This artwork captures the essence of a "homeland carried within," portraying hope not as a fleeting feeling, but as a vital organ necessary for survival.
